Something New for Special Education

In today's world of inclusion (as defined in IDEA '97); the presumed setting for the delivery of services and accommodations is the regular classroom. This year, here at OCS, we have put into practice a new special education delivery model- In-Class-Consultation. This model enables the special education teacher to better support both general education teachers and students.

The consultant teacher's goal is to enable children with disabilities to successfully participate in not only regular education classes but the typical grade level regular curriculum as well. As a consultant teacher, I focus my efforts on assisting the special education students together with their non-disabled peers in the general education classroom setting.

This carefully coordinated delivery model is structured in a way that the consultant teacher provides both direct and indirect services. The ICC model enables the special education consultant teacher to support her students best by using her expertise not only to provide support as directed in the IEP, but to engage the general education teacher in IEP accommodations and delivery as well. The consultant teacher becomes an integral link between the child, his IEP driven needs, and learning.

We need to remember that the premise behind all special education delivery models is "Special Education is a Service Not a Place".
