Oceans and Estuaries

Tomorrow is the day we leave for our 7th grade "Oceans and Estuaries" field trip to Sea Pirate Campground. Students will combine their MARE knowledge with hands-on experience to better understand the ways of the coastal areas of our state.

Our adventure begins with a day at the Tuckerton Seaport where baymen will teach us how to seine in the Great Bay. Students will also work with a decoy maker and make a "flattie" decoy of a sandpiper. We will also tour the seaport, including the lighthouse, and learn about the evolution of life saving techniques. We will discover the important role we hold in preserving this fragile eco-system.

Thursday is "boats away" as we kayak through the estuary into the Great Bay. Departing from our campground we kayak to Parkerton Beach for lunch and beach activities. Students "catch and release" sea life for identification purposes and enjoy time on the bay.

Friday promises to be an exciting day as we leave Sea Pirate Campground and travel to Long Beach Island. On the island we will tour Viking Village (home of a commercial fishing fleet). Students will learn about fishing regulations and sea life off our NJ coast. From Viking Village we travel to the Barnegat Light Coast Guard Station where we learn about the role of the US Coast Guard. Students will tour the command center and the boats and learn about the important role the Coast Guard plays in keeping our coastal waters and our country safe. Our day continues with lunch at "Old Barney" the 244 step lighthouse that energetic students and staff may climb. Combine all this with beachcombing and a trip to the Interpretive Center and you can be sure to have a wonderful conclusion to this ever-popular trip. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate as NJ Network's Classroom Close-Up will be on hand to film our adventures.
